Retention models, for understanding and predicting

Abstract Theoretical, empirical and semi-empirical retention models characterizing the effects of various operation parameters such as stationary phase, mobile phase composition, temperature, and programmed elution conditions on the retention in reversed-phase chromatography are reviewed. Special attention is focused on the possibilities of applications for prediction of retention, method development and optimization. Models correlating sample structure and retention are discussed. Theoretical and practical limitations of the models and importance of accurate data acquisition in the application are emphasized. Special topics such as behavior of ionic compounds in reversed-phase LC, selectivity adjusting using ternary mobile phase, or dual retention behavior on a single column depending on the mobile phase are also addressed.
