Leo received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam, whereafter he joined the Technical University of Delft where he took the chair in Analytical Chemistry in 1972. His research interests there were atomic spectrometry, liquid chromatography and chemometrics with important contributions in Zeeman Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and in the computerized optimization of mobile phase composition in HPLC. In 1987 he left academia to join the Unilever Research Laboratory in The Netherlands where he managed the analytical and information sciences with a particular interest in Foods Analysis. After his retirement from Unilever he served on expert committees for the assessment of education and research in Dutch Higher Education. Unfortunately, Leo passed away last year.
