Qualitative analysis, basics

Abstract Chromatography is a separation technique but the information obtained from the separation can also be used to identify a compound. There is always a finite level of uncertainty in chromatographic identifications, however, since the retention time is not necessarily a unique property of a given compound. Spectroscopic and spectrometric detection methods can increase confidence in identifications.
