Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEC)



Abstract Ion Exchange Chromatography (IEC) is used for the separation of (only) ionic species in an aqueous matrix with an ion exchange column. Separation of (strong) anions and cations is done by using an ion exchange column and an aqueous buffer as mobile phase. The mobile phase is a buffer solution with a given concentration and pH value. Buffer concentration an pH are carefully selected and controlled.
Applications of IEC include trace analyses in water e.g. tap water, cooling water, mineral water, seawater), analysis of waste water (heavy metals) and surface water, and analysis of inorganic and organic acids (e.g. amino acids).
